Background of the Study
Goodluck Jonathan’s administration made several efforts to improve women’s political participation in Nigeria. The policies were designed to increase the representation of women in political offices, with the ultimate goal of achieving gender equality in the political sphere. These efforts included the appointment of women to key government positions and the introduction of programs aimed at empowering women to engage in political processes. In Nasarawa State, particularly in Lafia East, the impact of these policies on local women's participation in politics needs to be explored, given the region’s socio-cultural dynamics that often limit women’s involvement in politics.
Lafia East, being one of the prominent areas in Nasarawa State, saw some of the direct effects of these policies. However, the implementation of these initiatives may have faced challenges rooted in traditional gender roles, societal expectations, and access to political resources. This study will investigate the success and challenges of Jonathan’s policies in promoting women’s political participation in Lafia East, focusing on voter participation, representation in local government, and women’s involvement in political campaigns.
Statement of the Problem
Although Goodluck Jonathan’s policies on women’s political participation were groundbreaking, they have faced numerous challenges at the grassroots level, particularly in conservative regions. In Lafia East, the success of these policies remains unclear due to factors such as cultural norms, low awareness, and limited opportunities for women in local politics. This study seeks to examine how effective Jonathan’s policies were in Lafia East and whether they contributed to any real changes in women’s political participation in the area.
